Benjamin commenced his Electronics and Communications Apprenticeship in 2019. He chose this career path because of his keen interest in electronic devices, medical devices and the medical industry. He is very interested in electricity, how it works and how it is generated and manipulated prior to powering the devices that we all know and love. At the end of his apprenticeship, he will be qualified as a Biomedical Engineering Technician.
“Throughout my time as an apprentice, I have gained the ability to perform annual servicing on medical equipment ranging from thermometers to electrosurgical units. I have also learned to fault find and troubleshoot a plethora of medical equipment whether they are located at the Alice Springs Hospital, or one of the numerous remote clinics that we provide annual services to. I have been able to bring a great work ethic and a willingness to learn to my workplace.”
Benjamin believes that positive influences in the workplace is an amazing catalyst to make work an enjoyable and fun experience.
What impact did your studies/work have on your life?
I attend TAFE at TAFE OLD (Brisbane) once a year for a 6 week block release. I would describe the quality of my training as second to none. I am extremely lucky to learn alongside some incredible and knowledgeable biomedical technicians and the experience I have had with TAFE Queensland has been incredibly informative, encouraging and motivating.
Throughout my time training I have developed the ability to build 12V power supplies, solder, troubleshoot and repair basic and intermediate electronic circuits, and provide inspection, preventative maintenance, and service to all electronic and gas based medical equipment throughout the central and southern region of the NT.
Working in a team setting has been very helpful throughout my training, as teammates can provide different opinions on methods of repair and troubleshooting. Having a more experienced teammate to work alongside also provides an express method of learning on the job. I believe that positivity makes learning much easier and makes work a better place.
In 2021 I was awarded the staff member of the year by Medical Equipment Management, this was completely unexpected and I am honoured to be awarded it. I was also a finalist for the 2021 GTNT Groups awards, this was a fantastic opportunity and experience for me and my growth as an apprentice.
Fun Fact!
I have volunteered as the captain of my indoor beach volleyball team and assisted other teams when other players or training was needed.
