“Everyone has their own techniques and skills to do the job. It is always beneficial learning different and new ways to become more skilled.”

Sidney Huggett chose to pursue a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade to challenge herself and expand her knowledge within the industry. She previously completed her Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation in 2021 and a Certificate II in Maritime Operations in 2020, which sparked her interest in working in the mechanical industry.

As a second-year apprentice working on Groote Eylandt, hosted to South32-Gemco the highlights of her training so far include operating new machinery such as lathes and milling machines. Sidney loves creating something from scratch and then seeing it used in the plant. Another highlight of her journey has been learning different techniques from each tradesman. Everyone has their own skills and methods, and learning these new ways has been beneficial in making her more skilled.

Sidney believes resilience, respect, and patience are the most valuable characteristics needed to be successful as an apprentice. She considers resilience one of the best qualities in this industry because it enables one to resolve problems safely and efficiently. Learning on the job means mistakes can happen, but an open mindset is essential. Respect for oneself and others is always necessary.
